BEIJING, China, 13 June 2025—The Executive Director of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, Dr. Natalia Kanem, is visiting China from 11 to 14 June to continue to strengthen collaboration between UNFPA and China in advancing demographic resilience and universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights.

The visit comes at a key moment as UNFPA finalizes its new Strategic Plan 2026-2029, as well as its 10th Country Programme with China for 2026-2030.

Dr. Kanem noted that she arrived in China at the end of her eight-year tenure as UNFPA Executive Director. She applauded the efforts of the Government of China in advancing the health and well-being of women and young people, and highlighted that UNFPA is proud to be a long-standing partner of China, with 45 years of cooperation to support development progress. 

Dr. Kanem held bilateral meetings with senior government officials and UNFPA national partners, including the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Civil Affairs, the National Health Commission, the China International Development Cooperation Agency, the All-China Women’s Federation, and the All-China Youth Federation.

She also met with the UN Country Team, private sector, academic partners and  young people to discuss UNFPA’s work in China and globally.

Recognizing China’s role as a leading contributor to global and South-South cooperation, Dr. Kanem said that UNFPA will continue to facilitate the sharing of experiences between China and other countries to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the goals of the International Conference on Population and Development in China and globally.
