International Day of Persons with Disabilities Photo Exhibition: Beyond the “disability” label, we are all wonderfully ordinary
In all our actions, our goal is clear: a world in which all persons can enjoy equal opportunities, participate in decision-making and truly benefit from economic, social, political and cultural life. That is a goal worth fighting for.
——António Guterres, UN Secretary-General
Despite numbering around a billion people globally, people with disabilities are among the most marginalized groups in our society. The lack of understanding of their rights and value leads to continuing stereotypes and social stigma against this group.
From everyday conversations to media narratives, it is still common to find persons with disabilities being stuck with the "disability" label. Often, they are being treated as recipients of pity, charity and medical treatment, or conversely, portrayed as superheroes who inspire others. Their other "labels" and features shared with people without disabilities are rarely the focus of discussion.
On the occasion of the 2023 Chinese National Day of Persons with Disabilities, we present the real lives of persons with disabilities, as ordinary individuals like everybody else, rather than role models or objects of pity. The photo exhibition highlights the diverse aspects of their lives and showcases their diversity across various fields and industries.
They can be professional. They can be sporty. They strive and enjoy life, just like you and me.
