Position Information:

Title: Intern on Population and Development (PD)

UNFPA China is seeking an intern to support its population dynamics programme.

1. Organizational Context

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is the lead UN agency to achieve universal access to sexual and reproductive health with the aim to delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential fulfilled.

Since 1979, UNFPA has been working with the Government of the People’s Republic of China, as well as Chinese academia, research institutions and non-governmental organizations to address priority issues in sexual and reproductive health and rights, youth, gender equality, and population and development in China. UNFPA’s assistance to the Government of China in those four areas is detailed in the eighth Country Programme of Cooperation for UNFPA and the Government of China (CP8), covering the period 2016-2020.

As one of the four key programme areas, UNFPA’s population and development programme focuses in three strategic interventions in China: (1) Data for population and development; (2) Supporting right-based national and sub-national development plans to ensure equitable access to essential services, including SRH, among migrants, women, youth and the elderly; and (3) Promoting equitable and healthy ageing through support to national plans and related monitoring and evaluation frameworks.

UNFPA China is also chairing the UNCT (United Nations Country Team) Theme Group on Population Dynamics (UNTG PD) and the UNCT Subgroup on Data for Development (D4D), advocating for coordinated efforts for better integration of population dynamics into national development planning and for the production of more and high quality disaggregated indicators to support the planning, monitoring and reporting of national and international development frameworks, including the SDGs.

2. Major Tasks for the Intern

Under the overall supervision of the Representative and Deputy Representative, the intern will be under direct supervision of the Programme Specialist for Population and Development of the UNFPA China country office and working in close collaboration with the PD team, and interact actively with other programme teams, the communication team and the operation team, and contribute to the entire Country Programme.

Key tasks for the intern:

- Provide overall support to UNFPA’s work in the area of population and development, including support to programme development and implementation;
- Assist in communicating with key partners in the area of population and development, and provide inputs for the CO to develop/improve network with population and development Government agencies, academic institutions, private sector organizations, etc;
- Assist in UN PD and D4D related activities, including communication with relevant member agencies, drafting meeting agenda, taking minutes, etc.
- Assist in collecting and reviewing population and development information, reports, documents, IEC materials etc. and provide suggestions to address key population and development issues;
- Support PD team in English-Chinese translation, editing, and proof-reading key population and development related materials;
- Undertake ad hoc tasks and miscellaneous activities upon request.

3. Recruitment Qualifications

- Graduate student in demography, sociology, statistics, social work, or other relevant social science disciplines
- Substantive knowledge in population and development issues, especially in data/statistics analysis, migration/urbanization, ageing, etc.
- Demonstrated analytical and strategic thinking
- Results-oriented, self-discipline and team spirit, and happy to take on challenging work for high-quality deliverable
- Excellent command of English and Chinese, both written and verbal
- Prior experience in data analytical work, researches on population and development issues or in developing IEC materials are a strong plus
