At Bwiam General Hospital, the primary referral facility for the entirety of West Coast Region II and portions of the Lower River Region (LRR), an atmosphere of dedicated care and urgency prevails within the labour ward. As a pivotal institution in the area, Bwiam General Hospital serves as a cornerstone of maternal and child healthcare, playing an important role in safeguarding the well-being of mothers and newborns from a diverse population.

Among the committed professionals ensuring safe deliveries is Jainaba Sanneh, an experienced midwife who received MISP preparedness training for emergencies from UNFPA. Operating at the forefront of maternity care, she supports the safe delivery of around thirty babies each month, each birth bringing its own unique challenges and triumphs.

Recounting one of her many experiences, Ms Sanneh shared "I was assisting a woman in labour who was admitted today at 11:00 AM in active labour. She progressed satisfactorily and safely delivered a healthy baby boy vaginally at 2:22 PM. The delivery was successful. The woman was cooperative throughout the process, and I was supported by my colleagues who monitored the mother's vital signs and helped care for the newborn."

Childbirth is a profound and demanding experience that requires not only advanced expertise but also emotional and physical support. With the generous support of UNFPA and China Aid, Bwiam General Hospital has been equipped with delivery beds, life-saving maternal medicines, and essential contraceptives. These provisions empower nurses and midwives to provide safe, dignified, and timely care, ensuring the well being of both mothers and newborns.

Yet, despite these resources, Ms. Sanneh and her colleagues encounter significant challenges. Many mothers arrive at the hospital without a companion, even though emotional support from husbands or other relatives can be critical during labour. In these moments, midwives step in to provide not only clinical care but also the reassurance and encouragement mothers need.

As Ms Sanneh explains,  "One of our greatest successes is witnessing the safe birth of a healthy baby. Today, for instance, the infant's immediate cry after birth brought immense joy to us as midwives. That cry signifies life and health and it means a lot to us."

For Ms. Sanneh and the team at Bwiam General Hospital, each successful delivery represents a victory. Every newborn's cry is a testament to life, and every mother's smile reflects their unwavering dedication and commitment to safe motherhood.
